Bloomington

Bloomington is the fifth largest city in Minnesota with a population of more than 85,800. It is part of Hennepin County and is nestled along the north bank of the Minnesota River. One of the suburbs closest to the Twin Cities, Bloomington lies just 10 miles south of Minneapolis and is easily accessible via the Interstate 35W and 494 highways.

The city’s origins date back to 1843, when missionaries established the Oak Grove Mission. In 1851, more pioneer families arrived with the opening of territories west of the Mississippi River. This early community chose the name Bloomington after the city in Illinois from where they originated.

Bloomington’s rapid population growth came as a result of the post-World War II housing suburb boom during the 1940s to 1960s. The territory was changed from a township to a village, installing a more professional form of government that resulted in the creation of more formal development plans throughout the community. Bloomington officially became a city in 1960.
